Polaroid Series - 4. Brighton Seafront, Brighton
Richard is fascinated with using Polaroid film with its one off unique image making capability coupled with the distinctive nostalgic aesthetic. He aims to capture images from a variety of location around the UK looking primarily at the contemporary urban built environment and redevelopment contrasting with decay and the industrial past.
Using his instinctive eye for composition he uses the Polaroid camera to capture various scenes from location views or scene setters, more graphic views and details of objects he finds of interest.
Richard visited Brighton on Monday 1st February 2010. It was a lovely sunny day but rather cold. He took this series primarily along the sea front and Brighton's iconic Pier.
The series looks at the decaying infrastructure and semi derelict premises along the sea front which are partly closed for winter but some closed for good.
There are tinges of nostalgia with the traditional British seaside amusements and paraphernalia. The burnt out remains of Brighton's old West Pier are captured, one with the setting sun a metaphor for its imminent removal.
